Atlanta Hawks Three years ago, in coach Mike Woodson's first season in charge, the Hawks bottomed out going 13 - 69 in the NBA's all time worst performance. The next season the Hawks went 26 - 56, still bad but a 100% improvement. Last year the Hawks went 30 - 52, another improvement but there is so much more left to be done. Last year the Hawks ranked dead last in scoring and percentage of 3 point baskets. Their highest ranking was 23rd in FG defense. The Hawks have suffered thru eight straight losing seasons and haven't seen the playoffs without buying a ticket since 1999.
Josh Smith is in his 3rd year in the league put up 16 points and 9 boards a game last year. Also in his 3rd year
Josh Childress averaged 13 points and 6 rebounds a game. True fans will have to eat another bad year but should watch Al Harrington, Marvin Williams and Shelden Williams for spirited play and improvement. There's good new in the future for this team just not in the immediate future.

The Bobcats are a nice collection of young talent headed in the right direction, with Vincent's leadership they should do well.

Sean MayChicago Bulls After picking up cans on the roadside for 6 seasons the Bulls have returned to the court as one of the elite teams in the Eastern Conference. The Bulls are a real threat to control the whole show this year. This season may be a return to the glory days

Artis Gilmore Cleveland Cavaliers Before LeBron James the Cavaliers hadn't won a playoff series in a decade. In LeBron's rookie year (2003-04 season) the Cavaliers won 18 more games than the year before. LeBron averages 27 points a game, 7 boards and six assists and sells a lot of tickets. The James Gang includes

For 7 straight years the Mavericks have won over 50 games a season and there is no reason to believe this season will be any different. Their roughest nights are facing the Golden State Warriors, other than that they can go all the way.

Tayshaun Prince Golden State Warriors The Warriors had missed the playoffs twelve seasons in a row heading into last year and were headed for unlucky thirteen but then something clicked. They won 16 out of the last 21 games and captured the eigth seed in the Western Conference play-offs. They ranked second in scoring last year but dead last in scoring defense with the worst rebounding margin in the league. Flip a coin as to which team head coach Don Nelson sends to the court.

Jason Richardson Houston Rockets The Rockets were 52 - 30 last season. They have not reached the second round of the post season in a decade. Rick Adelman is their head coach and with a little luck in round one this team could win the big one.

Yao Ming Indiana Pacers Three seasons ago the Pacers won 61 regular season games and advanced to the Eastern Conference finals. Last year they won just 35 games, the fewest wins for this franchise since 1988 - 89 and they missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade. They enter this season with a new head coach, Jim O'Brien. This franchise is in transition and this season is a coin toss.

Ron Mercer Los Angeles Clippers Two years ago the Clippers posted the best season since the team moved to LA in 1984. They won 47 games and advanced to the Western Conference semi-finals. Last year their record was 40 - 42. They are reffered to as "the other LA Team" and this year could be a rough one for the Clippers.

Memphis Grizzlies Last season's 22 - 60 finish was the worst in the league. The team was coping with recouperating players, mainly
Pau Gasol missed 22 games with a foot injury. This season should go a lot better for the Grizzlies.
